I bought a Wii

Because I like to think of myself as a “man of the times”, with my “finger on the pulse”, I decided to buy a Nintendo Wii.

You mightn’t have heard of it, it’s Nintendo’s newest video-game console and has some sort of motion sensor technology which, in a novel twist, uses a small stick-shaped controller instead of your whole body, like we’re used to with the Kinect.

Reasons I bought it:

  • It was only AU$78, preowned
  • It only took six years, but there’s finally enough good games to pique my interest
  • I missed Mario
  • Lack of games I could play with my girlfriend on PS3
  • I must play Skyward Sword

Things I’ve noticed:

  • I didn’t realise how accustomed I was to HD until it was gone
  • Nobody does local multiplayer like Nintendo
  • Making ridiculous Mii characters is as stupidly enjoyable as it was back in college, which was the last time I played a Wii
  • It’s been six years and there’s barely a handful of noteworthy third-party games available. The Wii shelves are a wasteland of gimmicky crap
  • But there’s more than enough great first-party games to keep me going for now

Games I’ve bought:

  • Mario and Sonic at the 2012 Olympic Games
  • Mario Kart Wii
  • Red Steel 2
  • Dead Space Extraction

Games I plan to buy:

  • Super Mario Bros. Wii
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
  • Metroid Prime 3
