Is this the worst theme song ever?

High on an Avengers buzz, I went and bought the animated series on bluray. So far, I’m loving it, but sweet Christ, do I leap for the fast forward button every time the opening credits start. It’s like somebody took the brilliant electric guitar of classic cartoon themes like Thundercats and Transformers, then shat all over it and lay some whiney nu metal vocals everywhere.

And the worst thing is, it sticks in your head.

The Avengers: Too many superheroes improve the broth

So it’s now a fact. Spiderman 3 had no excuse for being so bad. The “too many villains” angle was a criticism frequently levelled at Raimi’s third spider-flick. And yes, there were too many villains, there was too much going on, but no, that’s not why Spiderman 3 was so bad. Spiderman 3 was so bad because it didn’t blend all its ingredients together properly. What we got was too many disparate elements, carelessly juggled onto a page and then thrown together for a finale as if it would make up for the previous 90 minutes of messy neglect. A smoothie, if you will, whose ingredients were all blended separately and then tossed together in a mixing jug of disappointment, resulting in them all sitting flat on top of one another.

On the other hand, The Avengers is the exact kind of smoothie you would want to drink and proves that you can have too many ingredients and still make it taste delicious. I promise I will now stop talking about Spiderman 3 and smoothies. Continue reading

Three Surprises and Battleship

I’ve seen four movies over the last four weeks. Three of them surprised me. One of them was Battleship.

21 JUMP STREET

21 Jump Street

Level of Surprise: Quite Pleasant

I was expecting very little of this, having never seen the TV show, or having never liked Jonah Hill. But this was quite a pleasant surprise. The script cleverly plays with high school genre conventions in a fish out of water way. Hill and Tatum are the best buddy cop duo I’ve seen in a long time – Hill proving there’s more to his comedic skills than loud-mouth swearing and Tatum proving to all his detractors that he is more than just rom-com eye candy. He’s a funny guy. Continue reading

This is Cool: If Pixar Made Iron Man

iron man pixar

I love both Pixar and Iron Man, so would absolutely love to see this happen.

It was created by digital artist Victor Hugo and brought to my attention by Tony Reilly of the DSB.

Friday Fun: Sean Bean dies in every movie

Sit back, relax and watch poor Bean be gruesomely murdered a hundred plus times.

That’s not how I remember Battleship.

Taken right this minute at my local cinema, where I go to watch the movies that I watch.

Man on a Ledge: Cryptic Title of the Year

Man on a Ledge Sam Worthington Elizabeth Banks Ed Harris Jamie Bell

My favourite part of my Man on a Ledge experience was that I knew absolutely nothing about the film except that Sam Worthington would be on a ledge. In this age of the overly-informed, it feels like every movie we see we know the story in advance, we know the cast, we’ve seen the plot outline in the trailer and we can usually figure out the rest. For the most part, I’ve stopped reading film news and I’ve stopped watching trailers, and it’s thanks to this that a movie like Man on a Ledge can reach my eyes completely free of expectation or even awareness. This can definitely make for a more interesting cinema experience as the plot unravels to genuine surprise. I haven’t seen the trailer for this, but I’d imagine the first half of the movie is in there. Continue reading

Mark Kermode’s Superb Summation of Journey 2 The Mysterious Island

The film exists to have 3D fruit thrown at you by somebody’s muscular man boobs, so that a wrestler can sing “What a Wonderful World” with a ukelele and so Michael Caine can ride a bee in 3D and wake up in the morning and go ‘I’m in Hawaii and I bought a house’.

This just in: Groundbreaking new skyfall image shows daniel craig holding gun

image

Looks like Sam Mendes is playing up the “james bond has a gun” angle. Maybe he’ll even fire some bullets from the gun at some stage in the movie? Let us now open the floor to months of speculation about where he could be that has all those neon lights and what the significance of him wearing black is. Has he been to a funeral? Was it all he could pack? What was the weight allowance on his flight? Oh, the excitement of a first still.

The Expendables 2: A Horrible Sounding BBQ

This is Sly’s response to Aint It Cool News about The Expendables 2 having a PG-13 rating in the US:

”Harry, the film is fantastic with Van Damme turning in an inspired performance… Our final battle is one for the ages. The PG13 rumor is true, but before your readers pass judgement, trust me when I say this film is LARGE in every way and delivers on every level. This movie touches on many emotions  which we want to share with the broadest audience possible, BUT, fear not, this Barbeque of Grand scale Ass Bashing will not leave anyone hungry…Sly”.

What do you bring to a BBQ of ass-bashing?

Also, apparently the PG-13 is Chuck Norris’ fault.
