Mass effect 3: Can the ending really be that bad?

I still haven’t played Mass Effect 3. In three weeks from now, I’m having my Xbox 360 and Mass Effect save files delivered from Ireland to Dubai, where I will pick them up and return them to my home in Sydney and finally catch up with the rest of the world. A very inelegant and elaborate solution to this problem, but one which I hope will be worth it.

I mean, I’ve heard that the ending has been a massive letdown to 99% of gamers, but can it really be so bad that it ruins everything that has come before, over three games and five years? I wouldn’t think so, but if the balanced opinions of the general public are anything to go by, Bioware have ruined the lives of millions of people in ten little minutes.

Journey: Proof Video Games can be art

Video games get a hard time. They are frequently used as scapegoats for a violent youth, are dismissed as mindless entertainment and derided as artless compared to media perceived to be superior.

But the video game industry is a dark horse and it is becoming harder and harder for its detractors to dismiss as a mere distraction. Video games have been watching Hollywood closely and are now at the stage where they can outperform movies. Uncharted was hands-down more fun than the most recent Indiana Jones film, Mass Effect has crafted a far more engaging and deeper story than Avatar or any other recent sci-fi blockbuster, and now Journey proves that video games have the potential to be every bit as meaningful or as poetic as any piece of art or literature. Everyone’s talking about Assasin’s Creed III

Except me.

Me, I’m talking about Assassin’s Creed I. Which I hated.

I picked it up a few years back in a bargain bin, assuming I would like it. I mean, it’s about an assassin and it’s got sci-fi elements, and a cool, period setting. It’s sandboxy, what could go wrong?

And yes, it was pretty great. For the first couple of hours anyway. Then every gamer’s greatest fear crept in: monotonous repetition. Every mission stuck to the exact same formula. Eavesdrop here, pick a pocket there, use the information you get to go find a guy. Kill him. Continue reading →

My Mass Effect 3 dilemma

This is such a first world problem, but by God, it’s tearing me apart.

You see, it’s like this. I played the first two Mass Effects on Xbox 360 and loved them. But last year, I emigrated to Sydney and left my Xbox behind in Ireland. Then, upon settling “down under” I decided to buy a PS3 for a change, and also to finally catch up on Uncharted and Heavy Rain (totally worth it).

Resident Evil 6 Trailer: What’s up with that?

Here’s a few things that struck me about the Resident Evil 6 trailer:

  • I have absolutely no idea what any of it was about.
  • The bits with Chris Redfield look more interesting than the bits with Leon Kennedy
  • Leon needs a new haircut
  • Leon’s voice is ridiculous
  • “This is Raccoon City all over again!” – What about that town in Spain you were in, Leon? Is it not that all over again aswell?
  • God, Leon is stupid.
  • The whole thing looks ridiculously convoluted, as per usual. It looks like they’ve taken the Call of Duty approach and crammed three or more stories into one game.
  • Shouldn’t really be taking story cues from Call of Duty.
  • Looks like you can move and shoot now. Or at least slide and shoot. About time.
  • That guy who always says “Resident Evil” in that deep voice must be starved for work.
  • But ya, looks nice and I’ll play it. Hope they make it a bit scarier than the last one though.
